Part of our mission at The Table is to join God in the renewal of all things. That begins right here in our home city of Washington, D.C. Our involvement in various justice + compassion ministries near our Columbia Heights Parish have been ongoing for quite sometime. However, leadership has always desired to have a greater presence near our Downtown Parish and in the building at First Congregational, specifically. Coupled with our love for family ministry and ensuring children feel God’s love and feel known by the adults in their life, we’re excited to partner with First Congregational Church at our Downtown Parish as they expand their Homeless Youth Drop-In Center.
This program is managed by Sasha Bruce and Stand Up For Kids and has been ongoing for two years. On a typical Monday, 40-60 kids come by for pizza, treats, a chance to watch a movie, play games or just sit around and talk or relax. It runs from 6:00-9:00 p.m. and will soon be expanding to Wednesday evenings. Sasha Bruce and Stand Up for Kids also provide support services and the bulk of the volunteers. Mostly its about providing a safe, warm (or cool depending on the season) place to be and connect.
People who serve will enjoy pizza, interact with the kids, watch the movie, or play games. It’s a low key evening where you have the opportunity to pour into the lives of the next generation. The only prerequisite is a background check and a quick training which will be offered soon on a Sunday before our 5:00 p.m. service, or can also be done by WebEx.
